Research project: How to Become the Orthodox Grand Princess of a Latin Kingdom: Defining Dynastic Religious Identity in Late 15th Century Muscovy

Through this project, I aim to address the development of an Orthodox self-identification of the Muscovite ruling family during the late 15th century as prompted by local political conditions. By analyzing the Muscovite diplomatic correspondence, I will discuss how Ivan III of Moscow formulated a publicly asserted Orthodox identity, which his daughter Elena was supposed to display at the Latin Lithuanian court, with the goal of expanding Muscovite political influence in Western Rus’.
