My project explores responses to deindustrialization and the emerging social movements in Komsomolsk-na-Amure, a former closed military-industrial base in the Russian Far East. Drawing on mixed methodology, I analyse how the socialist values of the Soviet period intertwine with the the informal ethics of the Gulag’s criminal subculture in shaping the regional identities and political imaginaries of local activists.
