The project examines the modernization of the Azov Sea region in the second half of the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries through a combined transnational and local perspective, using Mariupol as a port-industrial case study. It conceptualizes the region as a space shaped by cross-border flows of capital, technology, goods, and people, and analyzes how transnational networks interacted with local dynamics such as port development, railway construction, and industrialization.
