The project investigates Byzantine reactions to the battle of Manzikert (1071). The battle was a collective trauma of the Byzantine elite. In the twelfth century, the Komnenoi emperors used this trauma to consolidate their power and justify their expansionist politics. The project studies the perceptions of trauma among the Komnenian literati and investigates connections of these perceptions through forts in landscape.
