The aim of the project is to show the significance and implications of monastic hamartiology for the Christian doctrine of sin. Based on important sources of Byzantine ascetic literature of the 4-7th centuries, I will focus on three aspects of Eastern monastic theology of sin: 1) doctrinal questions such as origin, nature, and effects of sin; 2) the historical development of this teaching and terminology; 3) its spiritual implications and practical application.
