Research project: The Dynamics of Sympathy in Late Antiquity: Philosophical and Christian Perspectives on the World, Society and the Individual

Sympathy (sympatheia) was a major concept of the Stoic and Platonic reflection on the unity of the world, denoting the interconnection and interaction of all the parts of the world. The Church Fathers converted the same concept into an expression of the solidarity of the members of the Church founded on their common suffering. The present project aims to study the transmission of this concept to patristic authors from the perspective of the classical heritage in Christian literature.
