Research project: Roads to Happiness, Roads to Despair: Traffic Infrastructure, Emotions, and Politics in Southeast Europe, 1839-1956

Traffic infrastructure is the subject of much emotional and political debate in Southeast Europe. This project will trace the nexus between connectivity, politics, and emotions, focusing on the entangled Bulgarian and Turkish developmentality in modern history, by using Foucauldian discourse analysis in the vein of Alf Lüdtke and Arlette Farge. It thus develops further recent trends in history and anthropology to see infrastructure within the framework of hegemony and its challenges.
