Research project: Courtly Ecologies in an Earthly Paradise: The Royal Parklands and Palaces of the Norman Kingdom of Sicily

The project examines a medieval Mediterranean landscape, the parklands of the 12thcentury Norman kings of Sicily. Borrowing Islamic technologies for park architecture and waterscapes, they displayed royal authority over their Muslim population. Part One surveys methodological issues on historical landscapes, examining power dynamics between the ruling Normans and Muslims who formed a majority. Part Two comprises case studies of parks, their architecture, and water sources.
