Research project: Creative in Struggle, Watchful in Liberty: Homegrown Religious Communities and the Secret Police in 20th Century Romania

This project provides the opportunity to revise and publish my dissertation, retitled Creative in Struggle, Watchful in Liberty: Homegrown Religious Communities and the Secret Police in 20th Century Romania, as a scholarly monograph. The book examines the lived experiences and creative resistance of two Romanian religious minorities—the Old Calendarists and the Tudorists—under authoritarian regimes. Drawing on both secret police archives and internal community materials, it explores how these groups used religious artifacts, visual media, and personal testimonies to assert their identities and contest state narratives. The project’s primary goal is to refine the manuscript for a broader academic readership while preserving analytical depth and scholarly rigour. Revisions will include updated arguments, integration of recent research, and enhanced clarity and structure. The monograph will also incorporate visual and archival materials, such as confiscated prayer books, handwritten documents, and personal photographs, to foreground the material dimensions of religious memory and resistance. By bridging religious studies, archival theory, and material culture, the book contributes to Central and Eastern European historiography and contemporary debates on memory, repression, and agency. Its interdisciplinary approach, combined with a clear and accessible style, will ensure its value for scholars across multiple fields as well as for the communities whose histories it seeks to honouphor.
