Research project: Redefining Citizens, Kith and Kin: Cross-border Migrations between Romania and the Soviet Union, 1960-1990

My project focuses on the transnational movements between Romania and the USSR during a period often assumed as rife with ideological splits and isolation. Based on unique materials, I advance a counter argument: while high politics may have reached a nadir, cross-border migrations remained lively. In one Soviet republic, every third applicant for citizenship originated from Romania. I unpack the practical logic animating such heightened mobility that has so far remained invisible.
