This project examines how and why writers in Britain and Ireland became involved in military and political debates around the fate of Yugoslavia during the Second World War and subsequent Cold War. Addressing a series of major literary writers as well as lesser-known texts and archival sources, it explores and interrogates representations of Yugoslavia in literature and culture in Britain and Ireland from 1941-1980, challenging monolithic or binary narratives of Cold War cultural politics, and illuminating the significance of cultural interventions to Cold War political discourse in the West. The first dedicated study of British and Irish cultural engagement with Yugoslavia in this period, this project will make a serious contribution to the cultural and intellectual history of the Cold War.
