Research project: Economic Knowledge, Administrative Action and Social Change in the Ottoman Balkans, 1839-1878

The character of the reactive modernization undertaken by the Ottoman Empire in the 19th century has long been questioned. Recent studies have accounted for the assimilation of political economy categories into financial and commercial theory. To what extent did they alter administrative action, and how the population reacted to the resultant transformations? State and business records will be employed to situate the analysis of public policy in the economic and social history of the Balkans.
