Science is needed for climate change, healthcare and competitiveness, but distrust in experts have made the public fearful of science. I argue this has been a key factor in the crisis of socialism, which drew strength from the optimism about scientific progress. The project does a literature review on the role of science in the decline of social democracy and describes the evolving impact of scientific issues on the programmes of the PES in the 20th and 21st century.
