Research project: ‘One Must Travel, but One Can holiday at Home’: Tourism and Nation-Building in Hungary, 1918-1944

The project investigates domestic tourism in Hungary from 1918 to 1944 with a focus on domestic tourism in this period within the borders of interwar Hungary and during the Second World War also into the ‘returned’ territories of southern Slovakia, Subcarpathian Rus and northern Transylvania. My main aim is to investigate the different strategies with which the Hungarian state and various other stakeholders in the tourism industry promoted domestic tourism to Hungarians.
