Ana Blandiana is one of the most important Romanian authors and public intellectuals of the post-war period. She studied Philology at the University of Cluj between 1963 and 1967 and began her literary career as an editor at Amfiteatru magazine. Her work combines intimate and existential concerns with a strong civic dimension, particularly in relation to censorship, dictatorship, freedom, and cultural resistance. Ana Blandiana has also played an important role in Romanian civil society: she served as President of the Romanian PEN Club from 1990 to 2004, President of the Civic Alliance between 1991 and 2001, and President of the Civic Academy Foundation from 1994. In 1994, she became the founding director of the Memorial of the Victims of Communism and of the Resistance in Sighet (www.memorialsighet.ro).
