Research Project
Translating Lena Lagushonkova’s Мій прапор запісяв котик [My Flag Was Wet by the Kitten] from Ukrainian into Romanian
This project focuses on translating Ukrainian writer Lena Lagushonkova’s autofiction novel My Flag Was Wet by the Kitten into Romanian. Published in July 2025 by Urbino Publishing House, the novel is set in a small town near Luhansk and moves between the Soviet past and the turbulent 1990s, using irony, dark humor, and absurdity to explore fear, conformity, hidden histories, and resilience. The translation presents a particular linguistic challenge: Lagushonkova’s prose is deeply rooted in the vernacular of the Donbas and contains regional expressions and “Donbasisms” that often fall outside standard Ukrainian dictionaries, including the deliberately unconventional phrase in the title, Мій прапор запісяв котик. The project therefore goes beyond the transfer of meaning, seeking to recreate in Romanian the novel’s distinctive rhythm, humor, cultural references, and linguistic texture.
