This project builds on my previous research on the entanglement between ancient societies and the environment in the lagoon of Venice. It proposes to deconstruct the notion of wetlands marginality in the Roman world by re‑examining marshes as socially, economically, and politically integrated environments. Rather than asking why Romans avoided wetlands, the project asks how they inhabited them, worked with their constraints, and embedded them within broader territorial systems.
