Historians can regard castles as a way to control the conquered lands, but on the other hand, fortifications are an integral part of the border defence system, that has repeatedly been able to stop external enemies. The research focuses on the rethinking the general perception of the reasons for the emergence and significance of early modern fortifications in Podolia. This will make it possible to include the Podillia fortifications in the Ukrainian historical narrative.
