My second book (Beloved Foreigner: early modern Europeans and the simian) examines the social, cultural and economic implications of actual contact between humans and monkeys in the early modern period. The project is based on archival case studies in Germany, France, Austria and the United Kingdom. The subproject at NEC will focus on the 16th and 17th-century global trade in monkeys and its implications on social and economic hierarchies in Europe.
