Research project: Mass Education and Survival Strategies in the Rural Areas of Romanian Bessarabia and Soviet Moldavia in the Interwar Period (1918-1940) and Late Stalinism (1940-1956) (2015-2016)

This research project aims at studying: 1) how the public elementary education and adult literacy campaign were involved in a broader modernizing process in the rural areas of Bessarabia and Transnistria regions (now Republic of Moldova) in the Interwar period (1918-1940), by two political regimes: the Romanian monarchy and the Soviet Communist power, then through complex changes between 1940 and 1944, when both regions were merged into the Moldovan Soviet Socialist Republic, until the end of Stalinist period; 2) the survival strategies used by the local population in order to prevent the acculturation process driven by the state through schooling.
