Event: NEC Seminar
Location: NEC conference room & Zoom
11 November 2026, 11.00-13.00 (Bucharest time)
Pavlo YEREMIEIEV, Gerda Henkel Fellow; Associate Professor, V. N. Karazin Kharkiv National University
The presentation examines how the “Ukrainian question” was articulated within the Kyiv Theological Academy, one of the major centers of Orthodox scholarship in the Russian Empire. Drawing on professors’ publications and archival materials, it explores different interpretations of Ukrainian history within a broadly shared framework of “Russianness.” These interpretations varied in their treatment of local historical, cultural, and linguistic distinctiveness, from largely undifferentiated all-Russian narratives to accounts emphasizing specific “Little Russian” traditions. Particular attention is paid to the intellectual networks, scholarly approaches, and religious ideas that shaped these differences.
