FUNDAȚIA NOUA EUROPĂ/NEW EUROPE COLLEGE invites applications for 1 position of Associate Researcher to work within the interdisciplinary project The (Im)possible alliance: Romania as Initiator and Beneficiary of the Humanitarian Aid (1970-2004), TE 119 PN-III-P1-1.1-TE-2021-0778 , led by Dr. Luciana Jinga.

Position: 1 Associate Researcher (Cercetător Științific)

Period: 18 months fixed contract starting 1 November 2022 or as soon as possible (according to the appointed person’s time schedule).

Number of Hours per Month: 75% (6h/day)

Salary: 1,121 lei net/month

Description of the Project:
The main objective of this project is to analyse the participation of Central and East European countries in the humanitarian aid effort, both as initiator and beneficiary, using as case study Romania, between 1970 and 2004. The research plan is constructed of three major axes/objectives. A first objective is to identify the principal characteristics of Romania – considered a Second world country – as provider and beneficiary of the human aid, and how the fall of the communist regimes, by modifying the geographic imaginary of Global North and Global South, dramatically changed the general discourse towards the region and subsequently the role as humanitarian aid actor. A second objective is to identify and to compare the Romania’s humanitarian grassroots actions, both as initiator and beneficiary, before and after 1989. A third objective is to identify and catalogue the most important transnational humanitarian networks that worked in Romania/for Romania

Activities:
Researchers will develop their own perspectives on the topic, add new case-studies to those mentioned above and publish their own scholarship in major international journals and books. They will also play a full role in the collaborative aspects of the project, including international conferences and events, co-authored and co-edited publications, developing website content, and public engagement opportunities. The posts include a generous annual research and travel allowance and funding for IT equipment. Mentoring and training will be available, along with opportunities to develop international networks. Researchers will be based in Bucharest to foster collective interdisciplinary research and methodology, and they will undertake regular trips for empirical research and workshops/conferences in Europe, Latin America, Asia and Africa.

Role:
The researcher will work on the Romania’s humanitarian grassroots actions, both as initiator and beneficiary. The researcher will develop personal perspectives on the topic, add new case-studies and publish their own scholarship in major international journals and books. The researcher will also play a full role in the collaborative aspects of the project, including international conferences and events, co-authored and co-edited publications, developing website content, and public engagement opportunities. The posts include a generous annual research and travel allowance. Mentoring and training will be available, along with opportunities to develop international networks. Researchers will be based in Bucharest and will undertake regular trips for empirical research and workshops/conferences in Europe.

Conditions for applying:
-PhD in political science, sociology, law, history, or anthropology;

-A strong academic track record with significant experience of conducting research on history of the Romanian communist regime (transnational) social movements, corporate accountability, transitional justice, sociology of international law, or transnational politics / activism, preferably including archival and oral history approaches;

-Excellent English language; A second language is an asset.
