Summary:
This paper argues that the nation-building process in Romania was continued under communism. This particular element of Romania’s recent history made the elites and masses alike perceive the Romanian nation-state as being still “unrealized” and continuously threatened by some of its neighbors, especially Hungary and the Soviet Union.
