Beyond the Screen: A History of Media Arts in Romania

The goal of my study is to investigate and develop a history of the artistic practices made in Romania which employ media and technology as principal means of production and presentation, while offering an insight into the cultural, social and political determinants underlying this history (roughly between 1960s to the present day). In this sense, I opt for a transdiciplinary approach for my study that cuts across various areas and methodologies such as art history, media theory, visual studies, epistemological reflection and technological evaluation, to focus on the historical dimension. Given that the field of media art remains practically unexplored and under-theorized in Romania, I expect that my research will address this lack in two significant ways: by introducing and developing media art practices as a specific area of art historical and visual studies reflection in Romania, and by advancing media art historical discourse in general through integrating a different referential framework and artistic visions specific to the cultural context of Eastern Europe.
