Research project: The Brothers Mărtinaș: A Representative Biography along the Csangos' Quest for National Belonging in Ceaușescu's Romania

This research will examine the historical narrative of the Csango community through the biographical lens of these two brothers, both of whom were ardent supporters of an effort to recast the Csango community as purely ethnically Romanian. In doing so, my work will shed light not only on the Csangos but also on the broader milieu, so that the Csangos themselves become a representative biography of any number of marginalized communities struggling to cope with the modernizing and nationalizing forces that beset the region since the interwar period. Moving into the communist period, this also becomes a portrait of a local elite, both secular and religious, and a look at how they negotiated their Roman-Catholic religiosity in an Orthodox nation – a nation that was, moreover, ruled by a Party extremely hostile to religious practice.
