Research project: Language, Society and Politics in Dualist Transylvania

During my stay in Bucharest, I plan to finish at least two distinct works, both parts of my wider project ‘Language, Society and Politics in Dualist Transylvania’, which explores the different ways Hungarian state nationalism and its rival minority nationalisms drew on linguistic resources and imposed themselves in the realm of language, at the same time mutually influencing each other. The time frame of my research extends from 1867 to 1914, and the territory under study encompasses historical Transylvania, together with its neighboring counties to the West, excluding Máramaros, but including Temes Counties.
