This volume brings together 22 articles by Paul Henri Stahl (1925-2008), director of the Institute for South-East European Studies (1999-2007), a member since its founding in 1963, honorary member of the Romanian Academy (1993), and professor at the École des Hautes Études en Sciences Sociales (1969-1999). Paul H. Stahl’s extensive and multifaceted body of work continues the legacy of the Bucharest School of Sociology (1925-1948) – one of the most significant collective scientific projects of the interwar period – at the crossroads of several disciplines: sociology, ethnology, and history. This collection is the result of a carefully curated selection from his complete works, focusing on the overarching theme of the structures that organize the life of traditional societies in South-East Europe. The selected texts are grouped around several interrelated subthemes: archaic pre-state formations, old village communities, the relationship between the built environment (house, church, village) and the social group, biological and symbolic kinship, personal identity, and naming.

The event is organized in collaboration with the Institute for South-East European Studies of the Romanian Academy.
